What You Think is Keeping You Stuck, Probably Isn't
Want to know a little secret?
What you think is keeping you stuck, probably isn’t.
In a recent coaching session with a client feeling stuck, we used a simple yet powerful tool to identify potentially limiting beliefs picked up over time and then internalized that she’d subconsciously made her own.
Awareness around this is so important because internalized beliefs are subconscious influencers of thoughts and feelings which directly impact actions you do or don’t take, which shape your results and experience.
Using this tool, my client was able to identify what was keeping her stuck; choose some more helpful thoughts; and decide on one simple, doable action to move forward that felt good for her to take and is resulting in greater success.
While reflecting on the session, I realized that I had a belief that was keeping me stuck. I was defining success with a narrow viewpoint that wasn’t actually 100% accurate nor helpful. Having such a belief seemed like something so small that it wouldn’t really make much of a difference, but it was actually a major limiter. So, I decided to use the tool for some self-coaching.
Using it, I immediately felt more expansive, light, and free. From this new space, I was able to choose a simple and doable action that is propelling me forward in positive, impactful ways.
We know that thoughts and beliefs impact actions you do or don’t take, which shape your results and experiences, which provide the “evidence” that imprints your beliefs that can get you into non-helpful cycles and keep you stuck.
I call that “the Creation Cycle” because it’s how most things actually get created. And, it all starts with our thoughts.
You can test it for yourself.
Reflect on your last big accomplishment. You probably had a thought that you could do it, which helped you to feel capable and willing to try. You then took actions that lead to you accomplishing what you believed and felt like you could. If you didn’t have such thoughts and feelings, you wouldn’t have taken action and then you wouldn’t have accomplished what you wanted. You would have been stuck where you were.
If you’re feeling stuck, take a look at your beliefs (all that you might think and feel about something). Doing so can shed some light on what might feel like a dimly lit path.
This self-awareness can help you choose more helpful thoughts and feelings that can activate the regions of your brain associated with insight, inspiration, and creativity. As this part of your brain gets activated, you’re better able to see even one small, doable half-step to take that will get you moving.
