Attention vs Intention vs Goals

Attention vs. Intention

Similar words, but very different meanings:

Attention: WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT OR FOCUS ON

Intention: a determination to act in a certain way. HOW YOU DECIDE TO BE

INTENTION determines what we give our ATTENTION to.

Example:

You hear a noise next to you.

Do you choose to focus on the noise or not?

Well, if your intention is to discover what made the noise, you will focus on it (attention) to discover what it was.

If you don’t want to find out what it was, you ignore it.

Intentions vs Goals

Setting intentions is very different than setting goals.

Setting goals is future focused. Goals provide a roadmap for what you want to eventually accomplish.

Setting and living intentions  is present-time focused. Intentions help you to recognize your values so you can live them. They provide a roadmap and reminder for how to live out each day.

Intentions give you purpose AND the inspiration and motivation to achieve your purpose.

Intentions must come from your heart, they are not the tangible “get promoted” or “lose 10 pounds” kinds of goals. They are heart-driven. They evoke feeling and purpose, like “open to learning or understanding,” “be healthy”, “let go of fear,” etc.

If your intention is be healthy, you will daily choose things that will support you being healthy – exercise rather than watch tv, eat healthy foods rather than junk food, etc.
